The One Planet – Polar Summit: Experts Warn of Accelerating Polar Ice Loss and Climate Consequences

08 Nov 2023 at 08:37

For the first time, experts and scientists are coming together for a climate summit aimed at preserving the polar regions and glaciers. The polar regions are hugely affected by global warming, the summit organizers emphasize.

The poles are very important for the conservation of various plant and animal species on Earth. The sea ice there also acts as a kind of buffer for the land ice. When the ice on land melts and ends up in the water, sea levels rise. And if there is no ice, it cannot reflect sunlight. This reflection actually helps against global warming.

Weather institutes have been measuring high temperatures in Antarctica, for example, in recent years. These temperatures are well above average. The European climate service Copernicus reported less sea ice than ever in the area in July, even though it is winter there.

The summer ice at the North Pole may no longer be salvageable. Even if we succeed in significantly reducing greenhouse emissions, there will probably no longer be any ice in the North Pole in summer between 2030 and 2050, according to research by South Korean and German scientists published on June 6.

The loss of Arctic summer ice could have major consequences for societies and ecosystems “within and beyond the Arctic,” the scientists wrote. In any case, they will share their findings during the summit with the UN climate panel IPCC.

The One Planet – Polar Summit starts on Wednesday and lasts until Friday. Researchers from more than forty countries are coming to Paris for the summit. International institutions, civil society organizations and representatives of indigenous peoples will also have their say.
