On Saturday night a police officer shot a “very aggressive” dog on Helmond’s Houtsdonk. The dog allegedly attacked another dog as he walked. Two passers-by sustained minor injuries during the shooting and were taken to the hospital.

Police received a report of a very aggressive dog at around 7:50 pm. Upon arrival at the dog’s residence, he ran out, according to a police spokesman. One of the officers felt compelled to shoot the dog, a police spokesman said. The dog died in front of the house.

During the shooting – according to local residents there were five to six gunshots – two people who were nearby were slightly injured. According to the police “presumably because of the shooting”. Neighbors say one of the injured is the owner of the dog. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Local residents are surprised. They know the young dog, a Stafford, as boisterous, non-aggressive. “He was a sweet young dog,” says local resident Cynthia Schapendonk. She didn’t hear the shots, but she came out shortly after.
