The Nuclear Threat: A Look into Putin’s Plan and the Global Presence of Nuclear Weapons

The war in Ukraine and the messages of Russian President Vladimir Putin raise fears that they will be used again nuclear weapons. Since the conflict began, it is common to hear the Russian leader boast of his nuclear arsenal, either to his own or as a warning message to other countries.

After announcing a deployment of this type of arsenal in Belarus, Putin has recently announced the development of the nuclear triad to guarantee the security of Russia. Thus, these types of weapons seem to be within the future plans of his strategy.

“This nuclear discourse, which definitely brings us closer to the precipice, is a consequence of associate nuclear weapons with power and privilege“, Carlos Umaña, an activist for the prohibition of nuclear weapons, explains to TVE.

90% of nuclear weapons, in the hands of the United States and Russia

The threat has not been so explicit since the Cold War, which pitted the Western capitalist bloc, led by the United States (USA), against the communist Eastern bloc, led by the USSR. The protagonists of that time Russia and USA., currently concentrate almost 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons. In recent decades, other countries have incorporated them and all continue to dedicate resources to maintaining and modernizing them.

As Umaña indicates, with the 84,000 million that is invested in this type of arsenal, it could, for example, clean the island of plastic garbage from the Pacific. Gone are commitments such as the START treaties, which limit the number of missiles. The third of these agreements will cease to be in force in 2026. “Nuclear weapons are not necessary, what is necessary is to eliminate them because either it is the end of these weapons or it is our end,” says Umaña.

While nuclear weapons are increasingly present on the world war scene, there are international organizations that condemn this type of action, such as NATO, which has branded Russian nuclear “rhetoric” as “dangerous and irresponsible.”

Thus, Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain in memory, where more than 200,000 people died from the nuclear bombs launched by the US, the only nuclear attacks launched so far.
