I’ve been a longevity researcher and regenerative medicine doctor for 20 years, and one of the most common questions I get asked is what kind of supplements I take to slow the aging process.

The supplement I have been taking daily for a few years now is taurine, an essential amino acid that plays a vital role in the body’s digestive, cardiovascular, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems.

Since then I have noticed an improvement in my overall energy level, exercise performance, and recovery time.

THE MAIN ANTI-AGING BENEFITS OF TAURINE

Many people may not have heard of taurine, but more and more research is dedicated to discovering its potential.

Here are some of its possible advantages:

TAURINE CAN IMPROVE HEART HEALTH

Aging often takes its toll on the heart, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Taurine has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, and allows the body to balance electrolytes and improve lipids.

It also helps regulate blood pressure and promotes the functioning of blood vessels, helping to maintain optimal blood flow and ultimately reducing the risk of hypertension, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and heart attacks.

2. CAN GIVE ENERGY TO THE MITOCHONDRIA

Mitochondria are responsible for energy production in the body.

In biology class, you may have heard of them as the powerhouse of the cell. But as we age, mitochondrial dysfunction can contribute to fatigue and other age-related diseases.

Taurine supplements may help protect these organelles from damage.

3. CAN STIMULATE CELL PRODUCTION

Stem cells are the key to tissue repair and regeneration. But as the body ages, their number and activity decrease.

Studies have shown that taurine can help stimulate the production of stem cells, particularly neuronal stem cells, which can boost brain function, as well as regenerate various tissues throughout the body.

Taurine is not a magic potion for longevity

Personally, I take about 2,000 milligrams a day, but for those unfamiliar with taurine supplements, I recommend starting with a lower dose (between 500 and 1,000 milligrams) and working your way up.

Of course, it’s always best to consult a doctor before starting any new supplement.

Remember that the key is balance and moderation. And if you don’t want to take supplements, you can add more taurine-rich foods to your diet. Some of my favorites are chicken, turkey, tilapia, tuna, scallops, seaweed, and beef.

One thing I always remind people is that, while supplements can play a role in promoting health and longevity, they should be part of a comprehensive, holistic approach to wellness that includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, stress and healthy lifestyle choices.
