The Netherlands versus Russia at the first MH17 session at the European Court


Court is separate from the EU, Russia is a member

The European Court of Human Rights, founded in 1959, is part of the Council of Europe. 47 countries are members, including Russia. It is separate from the European Union. Citizens can turn to the court for violations of the European Convention on Human Rights. The court has only ruled 16 times in a case between two states. Eleven interstate cases are still pending, including six against Russia.
