From 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening, stricter national measures will take effect in the Netherlands to prevent the spread of the corona virus, Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge announced at a press conference on Monday.

“From 6 pm tomorrow evening, stricter measures will apply nationally, which we thought would only be necessary in the cities for the weekend. That has been a matter of progressive insight ”, Prime Minister Rutte began the press conference. According to Rutte, the number of infections is increasing so quickly that the authorities are threatening to run after the virus.

“We are scaling up to national measures to stay ahead of the virus, to cut it off,” said De Jonge. Public activities at sporting events are banned throughout the Netherlands. Restaurants and cafes have to close at 10 pm and there is a walk-in stop at 9 pm. From now on, reservations must be made for visits to museums, libraries and zoos, a system of time slots will be used. There is also a maximum number of visitors.

Avoid journeys

Working from home is now again the norm in the Netherlands. Those who have no other choice are allowed to go to work. But if there is an infection in the office, the workplace can close for 14 days. The Dutch are allowed to meet at home with a maximum of three people outside their own family. It is also asked to avoid travel and displacement. Prime Minister Rutte also asks to only go to the store for essentials and to avoid family trips to the supermarket. “Do not go to Albert Heijn with the whole family,” said Rutte during the press conference.

The measures will be evaluated on Tuesday, October 20.
