DARZAVA – Darzava crater dubbed the “Gates of Hell” in Turkmenistan had been gaping and spitting fire for decades. President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov plans to extinguish it.

There is no scientific explanation for the origins or theory of how the fiery crater—which locals say has been spewing “devil’s breath” fire—is emerging.

The difficulty of unraveling the mystery of the emergence of the “Gate of Hell” is natural, because Turkmenistan was once part of the Soviet Union which was known to keep big secrets.

The Darvaza fire crater is in the middle of the vast Karakum desert. Little is known about the crater’s appearance, the result of a failed Soviet oil and gas drilling operation in 1971.

In 2010, President Berdymukhamedov actually ordered experts to find a way to extinguish the fire in the crater.

But those experts failed and the president is now demanding that the fiery crater be extinguished. “Because it has a negative impact on both the environment and the health of the people living nearby,” he said in televised remarks last weekend.

“We are losing a valuable natural resource which we could have made significant gains on and use to improve the well-being of our people,” he continued.

Other reports say the surreal site is actually a natural gas field that collapsed into a cave in the village of Darvaza.
