the Musée Dauphinois is looking for an Olympic torch from the 1968 Winter Olympics for an exhibition

The Musée Dauphinois in Grenoble has launched a research notice to complete its collection of objects linked to the 10th Olympic Winter Games in 1968. An emblematic piece is missing: a copy of the famous torch.

The Dauphinois museum keeps the most important collection of objects related to Xth Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble but a centerpiece is missing: the famous torch. The museum wishes to acquire it or is counting on a generous donor. The torch would be presented to the public in the exhibition “The white dream” dedicated to the epic of winter sports in the Alps. To find the famous torch, the museum launched a search notice on social networks.

A rare object …

The torch for the Grenoble Games was handcrafted in only 33 pieces by the Societe Technique d’Equipement et de Fournitures Industrielles. It is, along with that of the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games (22 copies), the rarest and the most sought after.

76 cm high, the torch, in copper-colored sheet metal, consists of a long handle lined with a red felt grip, surmounted by a protective sleeve whose body is adorned with three silver badges representing the official emblem of the Games .

… and desirable

With each sale, the bids fly. The most recent, last February in Vannes, saw one of these official torches sold for 90,000 euros. In 2018, the one that had been used to ignite the Olympic cauldron at the Grenoble stadium left for 202,400 euros in Paris. Finally, a torch from the Grenoble Olympics was also sold in the United States in August 2019. It sold for $ 225,000 to a private collector.
