The municipality of Saint-Nicolas will change the name of its avenue Léopold II

Following the death of George Floyd, the municipal majority approved the proposal for a name change.

Lhe municipality of Saint-Nicolas in East Flanders will change the name of its avenue Léopold II. A proposal to this effect was approved Friday evening at the municipal council. Initiated by the ruling coalition (N-VA, Groen and Open VLD) and by the CD&V in the opposition, it was adopted unanimously.

“A name change had already been mentioned several times over the past two decades, but for practical or principled reasons, it never happened. After the death of George Floyd, the subject returned to the table and today a majority has been able to vote in favor of such a modification, “explains the bourgmestre Lieven Dehandschutter (N-VA).

The avenue is an important artery of the city, close to the station and counting one or the other commercial sign. The municipal authorities could not yet say when the name change would take place. The future appellation is not yet known. “We are already hearing several suggestions, including names of people who have fought for equality, such as Nelson Mandela. But it will be up to the street names commission to decide. Local residents will certainly be consulted, but I still do not know in what form. The municipal council will rely on the commission’s proposal to select a name, ”concludes Dehandschutter.
