The municipalities belonging to the future new Jēkabpils region will form a single Finance Commission – in Latvia – News

During the regional visit, Madars Lasmanis, Adviser to the Minister for Local Government and Regional Development of the MEPRD and Ilze Oša, Deputy State Secretary for Regional Development, met with Aivars Kraps, Chairman of Jēkabpils City Council (GKML), Kristīne Ozols (Vl-TB / LNNK), Deputy Minister of Finance (JRP), executive director Guntars Gogulis, as well as the chairmen of Jēkabpils, Krustpils, Salas, Viesīte, Aknīste council forming the joint Jēkabpils municipality as a result of local government reform to discuss further measures to start the new municipality after the entry into force of the Law on Administrative Territories and Settlements .

According to Jēkabpils City Municipality, issues related to the development of new documents for the start-up, continuation and continuity of the newly established region, financing available to municipalities for investments in Covid-19 mitigation and business promotion, as well as investment program for road improvement in the region were discussed.

After a meeting with local media representatives, the chairman of the council Kraps pointed out that after the entry into force of the Law on Administrative Territories and Settlements in the new Jēkabpils region the total population will exceed 41,000. He emphasized that even after the reform the priority will remain the same.

“In order to continue to provide continuous services to the population, I plan to draw up a work plan for further action and mutual cooperation next week. After today’s talks with county leaders, we will take appropriate activities to ensure the establishment of joint county Finance Commission, operational work and jointly decide on not only for development, but also for administrative issues, “Kraps explained.

In order to get better acquainted with the situation in the newly established region, learn about the needs of the population and promote mutual communication between local governments, Kraps plans to attend the meetings of the surrounding councils in the near future and get acquainted with current issues.

After the press conference, the management of the City Council visited Krustpils Castle, Jēkabpils Multifunctional Sports Hall and Jēkabpils People’s House with representatives of the MEPRD.

As reported, in accordance with the Law on Administrative Territories and Settlements, the new Jēkabpils municipality consists of 25 territorial units with the administrative center of Jēkabpils city, uniting the former Jēkabpils city and Aknīste, Jēkabpils, Krustpils, Salas and Viesīte districts.

In terms of population, Jēkabpils municipality will be the 11th largest municipality with 41,200 inhabitants and a total budget of 68 million euros. Jēkabpils municipality will rank eighth in the overall rating of all local governments, but in terms of counties, excluding state cities – in the third place.
