An extensive study by the UK Mental Health Foundation on 6,000 adults has made a worrying finding for human health. Experts have found that mental illness, dementia, depression and anxiety affect the lonely most.

The mental health of millions of people is affected by loneliness, and more than a third (35%) of those surveyed say they would never admit to being alone, and a quarter feel ashamed of it, according to Mental Health.

Loneliness has affected the lives of many people during the blockages during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year the UK Mental Health Foundation explored how loneliness affects our health.

Mark Rowland, director of the Foundation, said: “Our data shows how loneliness affects the mental health of millions of people in the UK. We also know that the more lonely we feel, the greater the risk of poor mental health.

Loneliness can be toxic and can lead to anxiety and depression and is also associated with increased suicidal thoughts. It is a significant public health issue and, as a society, we can and must do more and better to help people who are alone. ”

Research shows that some groups of people are more at risk of loneliness, including young adults, people with existing mental health problems and people from certain ethnic minority groups.

Other groups more likely to be affected by loneliness are older people, especially those who are excluded from the digital world.

The results of the study show that one in two adults (44%) say that feelings of loneliness made him feel sad, and one in four (25%) said that loneliness led him to anxiety and worry. A quarter of adults in the UK feel ashamed that they are alone, and 35% say they would never admit to being alone.
