The differences in the price of toll roads in our country can reach 3,300%. You read correctly: depending on the territory, the date and time of use, the variation in the amount is brutal. If we analyze the cost per kilometer … What are the most expensive (and cheapest) tolls in Spain?

Thanks to an interesting report by Associated European Motorists (AEA) We can shed quite a bit of light on the reality of toll roads in Spain. What are their prices? Do they always cost the same? What happens if I get into one and I don’t have money? All these questions and some more will be answered in the following lines.

Brutal differences in toll prices

The price we pay to use the toll roads in Spain it varies very significantly depending on different premises, such as the territory, the date and the time we use them. According AEA, there can be variations of up to 3,300%!

For example, motorists crossing the Soller tunnel, in Mallorca, just 3 kilometers away, they will pay 1.67 euros for each km. However, those others who circulate from Puxeiros to Baiona, in Pontevedra, traveling 28 kilometers, they will only have to pay 0.05 euros / km. This means that the Galicians will pay 33 times less than the Majorcans.

This is the most extreme case we have found, but the truth is that there is a wide range of rates in 41 toll highways existing in our country. The tours range from the 294.42 kilometers of the AP-68 (Bilbao-Zaragoza) just three kilometers from the Sóller tunnel that we have mentioned.

Between the tolls more expensive, moreover, AEA In his report, he cites the Cadí tunnel (0.39 cents a kilometer), the Vallvidriera tunnel (0.25 cents a kilometer), the San Cugat-Manresa highway (0.24 cents a kilometer), the Artxanda (0.21 cents per kilometer) or the M-12 from the Barajas airport in Madrid, which also costs 0.21 cents per kilometer. On the contrary, among the cheapest, in addition to Puxeiros-Baiona, would be Larraskitu-Santurtzi (0.06), those of Seville-Cádiz and A Coruña-Carballo (0.07), that of Ocaña-La Roda (0.08) and those of Ferrol-Tuy, Alicante-Cartagena, Barcelona-La Jonquera and Mongat-Palafolls (0.09 cents per kilometer).

We are able to affirm that in almost half of the highways prices become more expensive in the hours of increased traffic flow, establishing important differences depending on the day, time or month of the year in which the road in question is used.

For example, if you use the AP-7, in the Cartagena-Vera section, between 1 and 7 in the morning, you will pay three times less than in the remaining 18 hours of the day. Or the one who uses the R-4 (Madrid-Ocaña) in rush hour, for example, at 7 in the morning from Monday to Friday, will pay double the amount used by one hour before: 9.55 versus 4.80 euros.

The truth is that you are price differences We will also see them depending on the time of use, similar to what happens with the amount of hotels. Thus, during the months of June to September and at Easter, driving the AP-7 from Alicante to Cartagena costs 78% more than the rest of the year. The same occurs in the AP-7 from Malaga to Estepona, in which the high season surcharge exceeds 62% of the normal rate.

The most common prices on our toll roads are 0.10 and 0.11 cents per kilometer. This figure is what we pay when using one out of three motorways and over a total of 1,569 km (that is, we are talking about 49.4% of the total motorway network).

If at the time of passing through a toll you do not have enough money, you should know that in Spain there is the possibility of making a “debt recognition”, For which we promise to pay it later. What we should never do is leave without paying, as we will be in trouble. However, with the proliferation of tolls that allow Credit cards to make the payment, that the situation of finding ourselves “without white” occurs is more complicated than before.

Remember also that the surveillance personnel of the toll roads is temporarily authoritative -at least until the arrival of the competent public agents- and is obliged to report the defaults, counting with “probative value” his version of events.
