GGD warns for meningitis (Techoma – Friesland)

The chance that other children also have meningitis is small, says infectious diseases doctor Monica Wong in an explanation. “We want to alleviate parents’ anxiety.”

If a child becomes seriously ill in a short period of time, has a high fever (sicker than usual), is drowsy and has a headache or vomiting or pain in bending the neck, the doctor must be notified immediately.

It is not yet clear from the hospitalized child whether the disease was caused by a (meningococcal) bacterium or by a virus.

It is nowadays exceptional that GGD Fryslân warns parents of symptoms of meningitis. Vaccination has dramatically reduced meningococcal disease, according to signs from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) this week.
