The liver is involved in digestion, secretes bile, stores nutrients, eliminates toxins and synthesizes enzymes, proteins and glucose. As he made efforts for us, a Spanish nutritionist explained what we can do for him.

The proper functioning of the liver is important for the body, because it is an organ “essential for the digestion of food and the elimination of toxic substances,” said Eva Rodriguez, dietician-nutritionist at HM Delfos hospital. Barcelona, quoted by the newspaper La Vanguardia.

In this context, she listed the main enemies of the liver.

Alcohol

It is the number one enemy, “a large toxin which, when metabolized in the liver, causes an increase in triglycerides (main constituents of fats) and thus promotes the development of hypoglycemia (decrease in glucose levels ) and hyperuricemia (excessive uric acid level), ”she explained. She added that there is no such thing as good and bad alcohol.

“There is no good alcohol and there are no healthy alcoholic drinks,” warned Eva Rodriguez.

Both fermented drinks like wine and beer and distilled drinks like whiskey and gin are metabolized in the liver, she said.

Industrial pastries

These ultra-processed foods appear on all lists of foods harmful to health, including that of the liver.

“They contribute to the accumulation of visceral fat around the liver, which is linked to obesity and overweight,” said Eva Rodriguez.

She added that ultra-processed fast food, baking and ready meals should be included in the same chapter.

Sugar and salt

A study by American researchers indicates that excess sugar can also harm liver health. While a recent study from a Chinese university points out that high salt intake can cause liver changes, La Vanguardia recalls.

Red meat, butter and cream

Eva Rodriguez also called for moderating the consumption of red meat and fats, as well as processed meats such as burgers, sausages and sausages. To fill up with protein, it is best to bet on “white meats, fish and legumes”.

There is a need to “increase the consumption of plant products over animal products” to maintain good health and a healthy liver, she noted.

The fat of choice should always come from nuts, seeds, olive oil or avocado, and it is advisable to limit other sources of fat such as cream, butter and products containing fat hydrogenated.

Preferred

Eva Rodriguez also returned to foods that promote liver function and improve digestion.

“Among them, there are vegetables with a slightly bitter taste, ranging from artichoke to chicory, chicory to radish or eggplant,” she said.

Finally, according to her, a liver that does not function properly does not necessarily give signs, but certain clues can warn us.

“When the liver is not working well, it can cause jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), fatigue, loss of appetite […] abdominal pain, color change in stool and urine, nausea or vomiting. ”

She added that liver problems could even affect the limbs, with swelling in the legs and ankles.
