“The Medium can’t be done that way on the current generation of consoles.”

While most of the games featured in the new Inside Xbox release last Thursday will be available on next-generation and current-generation consoles, one of the two exceptions is The Medium from the Bloober Team (the other is Scorn).

In an interview with Gamespot, lead game designer Wojciech Peyko explained how simply impossible to make The Medium in the same way on current-generation equipment, although it has not yet provided all the details, since they are related to specific game mechanics.

The idea came to us back in 2012. Of course, the game has changed, and our approach has changed, but only the next generation can cope with our vision. So yes, we were waiting for this.

I can’t tell you now about our most important function. But game mechanics built around two worlds cannot be fully implemented on the equipment of the current generation. This is what will distinguish The Medium from any other game. It is even patented. The game simply cannot work in the same way on the platforms of the current generation. And that is why we are developing the game for the Xbox Series X and PC.

Peiko also praised the fact that next-generation equipment will be equipped with SSDs.

For immersion, which is crucial in our games, this will be the best feature and it will be provided by Microsoft. Thus, we can now first imagine our vision of The Medium, as we imagined it.

The psychological horror game, thanks to the special music of the famous Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka (as well as Arkady Reikovsky from Bloober), will be released for the Xbox Series X and PC (Steam) this year’s holiday season.
