There is already a leading version of the death of the mayor of Yakoruda. The Prosecutor’s Office launches an investigation into suicide instigation.
Nuredin Kafelov was found with a gunshot wound to the head in his private car this afternoon. An inspection is underway at the site. His car was unlocked and bullet holes were found in his phone.
The main version of the death of the mayor of Yakoruda is suicide, but a version of murder is not excluded – the Blagoevgrad district prosecutor’s office informed bTV.
According to initial reports, there were even bullet holes in his phone. It is alleged that he had a conversation that angered him and that he fired at the device, the prosecutor’s office told bTV.
Yesterday Kafelov was hunting, and today he told his colleagues that he was going for a walk in the forest. After he didn’t show up at the council for an unusually long time, they went looking for him. They found him near the Treshtenik area, in his car.
“I believe they will quickly reveal the cause of death of the mayor of Yakoruda. I take this opportunity to express my condolences to all residents of Yakoruda, his team and especially his family. He was one of the longest serving mayors in the country,” said Nikolay Shushkov, regional governor of Blagoevgrad.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office communicated that with the start of the site inspection, an investigation procedure was initiated for instigating suicide. Other versions are also being worked on. Kafelov has been the mayor of Yakoruda for many years. He sat in the mayor’s chair more than 20 years ago, in 1999.
A number of actions related to the investigation are pending and all stories will be verified, the state prosecution said. The Interior Ministry adds that the mayor of Yakuruda has permission to use two types of weapons.
“A criminal case has been initiated for incitement to suicide. This is generally the practice, but in this pre-trial the investigation is comprehensive and covers both induction and premeditated murder. Each version is in the works. At this stage, the findings point to suicide. If he is willing, other actions are currently underway in the investigation,” prosecutor Kostadin Chilev told bTV.
In 2022, a complaint was filed against Nuredin Kafelov for the illegal expansion of the cemetery park by the local population. Subsequently, teams from the Anti-Corruption Commission entered Yakoruda Township, seizing documents from the Town Hall building in order to investigate the case.
