The Maxus RG20 is a cheap VW California from China

Among other things, the Chinese are known for building inexpensive copies of famous cars. That’s why we took a look around the world of motorhomes and campers and came across the Maxus RG20, which could be an alternative to the VW California.

The first thing that strikes you when you look at the Maxus RG20 data, facts and figures is the retail price in its country of origin: the manufacturer charges 270,000 yuan. This is converted and according to the current exchange rate only 36.450 euros. In other words: a price that corresponds to an average equipped small car in our country. To give you an idea: For the cheapest California 6.1, VW charges at least 61.761 euros.

Ok… we don’t know about the quality of the RG20, but it sure has everything you need for an adventurous camping trip. There are six seats in total, two in front and four in the back. Rear passengers also have access to a folding table. These seats can also be folded down to create a bed 220cm long and 110cm wide. As you can see, there is a second sleeping area on the roof which is the same size, giving the RG20 beds a total of four people.

A hob, fridge and sink are available for residents to cook with. As a “bathroom” there is an outdoor shower with a 60 liter fresh water tank and a portable toilet. A rear awning is also available to create a shaded area outside the vehicle. Another look at the equipment of the RG20 shows, among other things, an internal heater, a 2,000 watt inverter, LED lighting and a 200 Ah battery.

The guide? A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is used here, which produces 224PS and 350Nm and drives the rear wheels only. Interestingly, the renowned specialist ZF is responsible for the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Could this motorhome at this price also be successful in Europe? we are almost certain…
