Since the beginning of the year, 54 (50 men and 4 women) cyclists have lost their lives on Italian roads, 50% more than the 36 in the same period last year. This is one of the data released by the Asaps-Sapidata Cycling Observatory, which in the whole of the past year had recorded a total of 197 cyclist deaths.
The highest jump
It is above all what worries the professionals January, when 18 two-wheeler users were hit and killed, the highest balance in the last six years (10 in 2023, 11 in 2022, 15 in 2021, 11 in 2020, 10 in 2019 and 12 in 2018). In February there were 7 deaths, in March 15 and in April 14.
Cases of road hacking
Thirty of the 54 cyclists who have died this year were over the age of 65, with two dying in the last week. Piracy cases they were registered in the Rimini area on the border with San Marino, after the cases of Cona (Venice), Cassola (Vicenza) and three others in Castel Volturno, in the Caserta area, by a young man who fled with his friends and then showed up a few hours after the fatal accident, in Borgaro Torinese, where a 47-year-old was left to die on the road, and in Susegana, in the Treviso area. A 90-year-old in Bolzano was hit by a bus on a fast lane.
The regions involved
As regards the regions, Veneto and Lombardy with 9 victims each precede Emilia Romagna (7), Campania (5), Lazio (4), Tuscany (4) and Friuli Venezia Giulia (4).
