Four days after the formalization of the closure of the maternity hospital of the Inkermann polyclinic in Niort, the time was this Monday, November 22 to the explanations of the management of the institution. The Niort hospital also wanted to reassure about the care of expectant mothers.
On the closure, the management of the establishment that belongs to the Elsan Group detailed the figures for the decrease in the number of births: 515 in 2019, 450 in 2020 and “a decrease seen again in 2020 with about 400 deliveries”, says Cyrille Keriquel, director of the polyclinic. Inkermann who is also and above all confronted with the lack of practitioners. Two of the four gynecologists of the institution will indeed stop obstetrics, that is, the management of deliveries, at the beginning of 2022 and the polyclinic has not managed to recruit.

The director explains this by two factors : “Gynecologists-obstetricians want to practice in large teams. A team of eight to ten obstetricians means that he has fewer guards and can communicate more easily with his colleagues. The second point is the responsibility of obstetricians in the liberal sector. Young people want less and less to be in trouble with these risks and the insurance that goes with it. At the hospital, doctors are covered by the public hospital insurance”.
Cyrille Keriquel denies the profitability argument put forward by the CGT. “If it was a question of profitability, I believe that the maternity hospital would have closed for a long time already. The subject is eminently safe. I can’t leave a maternity hospital open with two practicing obstetricians”. The department has 17 staff, ten midwives and seven childcare assistants, affected by a social plan. A midwife has already contacted the Niort hospital.

Consequence of this closure for this two-Sevrian pregnant four months crossed near the clinic “I’m really disgusted to think that I’m going to have to turn to the public when it was a choice to come in private”. The nearest clinics are in Poitiers (Vienne) or Soyaux (Charente).
The Niort hospital for its part reassures, it has insured 1423 births in 2020 for a capacity of 1800. “Our buildings are ready to receive women in good conditions. We have four delivery rooms, we will increase to five”, details Dr. Farnam Faranpour, chairman of the medical establishment commission of the Niort hospital.
Recruitment is planned: 3.5 midwives. The same applies to gynecologists-obstetricians. “We have a secure recruitment, the ideal would be two or three more. But with the number that we are we manage to ensure a permanence of care and all requests for consultation”, says Dr. Claire Dekindt, head of the woman-mother-child pole at the Niort hospital. The polyclinic Inkermann she continues gynecological consultations and pregnancy monitoring until the 8th month.
