This is how you could roughly describe the linnet, at least as far as the male is concerned. The species name comes from the blood-red breast and the red cap in its magnificent plumage – the male here has already moulted into the plain plumage and therefore shows less red, the female generally lacks the red features.
As you can already guess from their stature and beak, linnets are finches. They are not as well-known among the population as some of their relatives, which could certainly have something to do with their decline in numbers in Central Europe and the preference for their habitat: they prefer open areas such as heaths, vineyards, but also ruderal and wasteland areas – straight the latter are places that people don’t like to see and want to seal up for construction as soon as possible or make them suitable for agriculture. An exception to this is occasionally industrial areas, where they see their demands fulfilled.
In any case, it is important that there are enough herbs with lots of seeds that they can feed on. Only their young are fed protein-rich insect food to raise them, otherwise they only eat seeds by crunching them 😉 In contrast to other seed crunchers such as the siskins, for example, they prefer to look for their food on the ground.
