The Lingering Pain: Two Years After the Chaotic US Military Withdrawal from Afghanistan

Two years ago, on August 30, the U.S. military announced the completion of its evacuation mission from Afghanistan. During the hasty withdrawal process that lasted for half a month, the disorder, chaos, and killing of the US military brought huge disasters to the Afghan people. Today, two years later, the pain caused by the withdrawal of US troops is still lingering. Let’s move on to the international newsletter series “The Two Years That Moment”.

“Darkest Hour” two years ago

Two years ago, the evacuation of the U.S. military was chaotic. The scene of the fleeing crowd chasing the plane on the airport runway and the death of Afghans clinging to the plane shocked the world.

On August 15, 2021, the Afghan Taliban returned to the capital Kabul, and the U.S. troops withdrew hastily.

On August 16, 2021, the U.S. military withdrew from Kabul Airport. A U.S. military transport plane forcibly took off and many people fell down.

On August 19, 2021, a father handed over the baby to the U.S. military. After the U.S. military withdrew, the baby was abandoned at the airport.

On August 26, 2021, two explosions occurred near Kabul Airport, and a large number of civilians were shot and killed by the US military.

On August 29, 2021, the US military launched an air strike on a residential house in Kabul, killing ten innocent members of a family, including seven children.

On August 31, 2021, at Kabul Airport after the withdrawal of the US military, a large number of equipment and instruments were damaged by the US military.

The Fallen “American Dream”

When the U.S. military evacuated hastily, a military transport plane was forcibly taken off, causing some Afghan civilians to fall together with their “American Dream”. One of the dead was dentist Fayda Mohammad. Let us follow the lens of the reporter to see his story together.

Panda Mohammad, the father of the victim: Feida Mohammad is my eldest son. He is in good health. He weighs about 85 kilograms. He exercises regularly and behaves well at home. He is very polite. Because of his education, he never bothered me and his mom.

During the interview, Fei Da’s father choked up several times. Two years ago, Fei Da fell from a U.S. military plane onto the roof of a residential building, and people around him called Fei Da’s father. Unprepared, he received news of Fei Da’s death.

Panda Muhammad, father of the victim: I received a call from a stranger at around 3:00 or 3:30 p.m., asking me if Feida Muhammad is your son? I said yes. Asked if it was possible to claim his body, the condition of his body was very bad.

Fei Da went to the airport without telling his family that day. After receiving the news of his death, the family fell into grief, and they asked around about the situation at the airport that day.

Panda Mohammad, the father of the victims: The fact is, according to the information we received, when they were going to get on the plane, the door was closed, they had nowhere to go, climbed on the wing, the door was closed, and they were hanging on the wing. People thought they could still come down, or that the doors would open and they could go in.

It is impossible to verify what happened to Feida at the last moment before the fall, but judging from the video at the airport at that time, the US military plane took off forcibly, completely ignoring possible casualties while surrounded by Afghan people.

Panda Muhammad, father of the victim: Feida and the others did not know that the U.S. military does not care about human rights. They emphasize human rights, but they do not act on that basis. The United States only sets human rights standards for other countries, but they never follow them themselves, and they do not defend human rights anywhere.

Feda’s father said his children had been deceived by the so-called American dream. Affected by the long-term propaganda of the United States, many young Afghans have unrealistic fantasies about it.

Panda Mohammad, the father of the victims: You say human rights, so how do you bomb houses and make people fall from planes? You should consider the human rights of these people and compensate them, you should ask these situations, what have they suffered?

Fei Da was 25 years old when he died, and his family conditions were not well off. In order to train Fei Da to become a dentist, the family spent all their savings, and later when Fei Da got married, the family even borrowed foreign debts. This also prompted him to hope to go to the United States to earn more money to help his family. But maybe he couldn’t imagine that the US military would forcibly take off among the Afghan crowd.

Panda Mohammad, the father of the victim: If they cared about the lives of the people, they would not do such destruction for the people of Afghanistan. When they retreated from Afghanistan, they destroyed the places they built, and the places that were good were destroyed, and they also destroyed the airports and other places that they built, and they even destroyed the planes. Their arrival is a nightmare for the Afghan people, and they are not here to improve the lives of the Afghan people.

After Feida’s death, the United States issued a statement saying that it would investigate the matter, but in fact there was no follow-up. Feida’s family did not receive any inquiries from the United States, let alone compensation.

Panda Mohammad, the father of the victims: The United States has committed a huge fraud against us, and we will never forgive them, and they have not apologized to us, and have not contacted us.

Main station reporter Li Shuangxi: The pain caused by Fei Da’s death may never be able to dissipate from the hearts of his relatives. There were many people who rushed to the airport holding the so-called American dream when the US troops left Afghanistan, and many of them, like Feda, were forever frozen in that moment.

Misfortune falls from the sky

During the evacuation process, there were many explosions at Kabul Airport. The United States threatened to “retaliate” against the extremist organizations that attacked them, but used drones to kill ten Afghan civilians, including seven children. Misfortune, just like this “falls from the sky”. Recently, a reporter from China Central Radio and Television went back to the place where the family lived and interviewed the neighbors who saw the tragedy with their own eyes.

Ahmadi’s residence is located in a densely populated residential area in the northwest of Kabul. When the reporter arrived, the gate was locked and the victim’s photo was hung above it.

Shabir’s house is only one door away from Ahmadi’s. When the attack happened two years ago, he witnessed the tragedy with his own eyes.

Shabir, Ahmadi’s neighbor: I was in my room at the time. When the explosion sounded, our house shook. When I ran out, I found it was full of dust and smoke. Then I came to the street from the path in the backyard. . When I went in, everyone was like charred logs, neighbors had picked up the wounded lying in the corner of the yard, and the bombed-out car was like charred charcoal.

The tragedy happened in August 2021. On August 26 of that year, the U.S. military, which was retreating hastily, was attacked by a suicide attack by the Khorasan branch of the extremist organization outside Kabul Airport, killing 13 U.S. Marines.

On August 29, 2021, the US military immediately launched the so-called retaliatory operation. The U.S. military claimed that the target of the attack was Khorasan terrorists who were about to launch another car bomb attack. However, the surveillance video released later showed that this was just an ordinary house. At first, the U.S. military insisted that it was a “terrorist” who was killed in the bombing. Until the media found surveillance video and other evidence at the scene, U.S. military investigators found that their judgment on Ahmadi was wrong.

Shabir, Ahmadi’s neighbor: Don’t say two years, even five or ten years, I will never forget it. Every time I pass by their house and get close to it, the scene at that time emerges in front of my eyes. The burning flames, the people screaming, it made me sick.

Ahmadi’s neighbor Wahidullah: The day before the explosion, Farzad asked me to go out to play together. I told him that I had something to do, but now, every time I pass by their house, I always think of Farzad.

According to statistics, during the 20 years since the U.S. military invaded Afghanistan, 174,000 Afghans, including more than 30,000 civilians, were killed, and nearly one-third of Afghans became refugees. Countless civilians who were “manually killed” by the US military did not wait for an apology, and no one will be responsible for their deaths. Ahmadi’s neighbors have a deep understanding of the atrocities committed by the US military.

Ahmadi’s Neighbor Shabir: All of us are clear that the US comes for their interests and as soon as their interests are over, they leave.

Ahmadi’s neighbor Wahidullah: I want to tell the United States that this family is too innocent. We hate America, they killed our fellow man, they killed our neighbor, my friend is gone.

Main station reporter Jiang Haoyu: After two years, whenever the neighbors walk through this small courtyard, they will still recall the scene of the Ahmadi family lying in a pool of blood that day. They are angry and painful. They hate the US military for killing them. neighbors, their friends. Today, the photos of the victims are still hanging above the gate of the small courtyard where they lived, reminding all Afghans not to forget the crimes committed by the US military here.
