The license to operate the BelNPP was issued with security violations – European Commission

“Although the decision to commercialize the plant in Astravets is the responsibility of the national authorities, it is necessary to ensure the maximum safety of the plant operation under the supervision of the national regulator. This is even more important given the country’s proximity to the EU border and the Lithuanian capital Vilnius,” the European Commission notes.

The EC stated that Belarus should deal with the nuclear safety of Ostrovets in full transparency, including completing an independent examination of the European group of nuclear safety regulators at the Ostrovets plant.

Context:

The construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus is carried out according to a Russian project, the Russian agency reported. TASS… BelNPP will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1200 MW each. The general contractor is Atomstroyexport (part of Rosatom). On November 3, 2020, the first power unit of the BelNPP was included in the unified energy system of the country. The commissioning of the second power unit is scheduled for 2022.

European Parliament in February 2021 adopted a resolutiondemanding to suspend the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets due to concerns related to its safety.
