The luminary of Romanian poetry died at the age of 39, in the sanatorium for mental illnesses of Dr. Șuţu, located on Strada Plantelor in Bucharest.
Eminescu’s tomb in the Bellu Cemetery
Mihai Eminescu died alone, as were the last years of his life, but poetry was by his side until his last breath. According to eminescologist Nicolae Georgescu, in the robe of the dead poet were found his last verses, foreboding:
“So much fire, so much sky
So many holy things
Over the darkness of life
You spilled, father!”.
The late priest Constantin Galeriu, one of the most important clergymen of Romanian Orthodoxy, explained these last verses theologically, during a symposium dedicated to the poet.
“The Romanian theologians of the time did not rise to the thought expressed, here and in other texts, by the poet. It is the ultimate meaning of the Eminesian sacrifice received not for himself, but for his nation”said the priest Galerius.
The theologians also affirm that Eminescu
he was buried in great haste, without observing church customs.
“As if with an unnatural haste, Eminescu was placed in the grave on Saturday (June 17). We don’t know what prevented the Funeral service from taking place immediately after the Holy Liturgy served in the morning in the Church of Saint Gheorghe Nou, where the coffin in which he lay was placed
On the last journey, the poet was guided by the few friends and relatives, including Mihail Kogălniceanu, Toderiţă Rosetti (Elena Cuza’s brother), Titu Maiorescu, Lascăr Catargiu, many students and pupils of the Bucharest Normal School of Institutes.
On behalf of the students, Gheorghe Calmuschi, a Botoşan like the poet, spoke some emotional words.
“And we who loved you and cherished you so much will tear your grave for a long time and we will crown it with linden flowers, pronouncing the name Eminescu, which contains as much in it as a whole world”.
The obituary was delivered by Grigore Ventura, editor-in-chief of “Adevărul” newspaper, who said: “What lies here before us did not belong to anyone, but to all Romanians. No wonder we all mourn him; but our tears, all of them, will change into fruitful and beneficial dew under the light rays that will spread the sun of the beloved poet’s memory”.
