During the first seasons of The Last Kingdom, we met Sigefrid’s brother (Björn Bengtsson), Erik Thurgilson, who was winning the hearts of the fans of the show.
Many expected to see some relationship of the character with the lady of Mercia, Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), which unfortunately never happened because he was killed by his own brother. Sigefrid found out about Erik’s betrayal in the season two finale, so he ended up murdering him.
His sudden and surprising death made viewers think that it was all due to the actor’s problems with the production of the series, which led the actor to speak and clarify things about what happened.

The reason for the character’s departure was due to the adaptation of the Bernard Cornwell, where Erik had been stabbed in the chest by his brother and only appears in one of the novels.
In an interview with Christian Hillborg in May 2020, he explained that his contract had ended because everything was planned and predestined by the books.
“I guess everything was predestined for both of them to die. It would be boring to see one of us, you know, in the third or fourth season.”
“Of course, character-wise, I wouldn’t have created Erik the way I did if Bjorn wasn’t there. I think it was kind of a teamwork to develop the characters.”
