The Knokke look is passé, this is how young people tie their sweater in 2022: “Every generation has its own way” | Nina

Even in the summer it is sweater weather, certainly with such a changeable climate as the Belgian one. If you don’t know where to stay with your sweater, you can take an example from our youth. They increasingly wear the piece crossed over their upper body. No, not like the Knokke look – too bourgeois, too boomer -, but in their own way. Fashion journalist David Devriendt explains how and frames the trend. “Due to the fanny pack trend, young people have become accustomed to wearing something on their chest.”

When you’re on vacation or walking in the city, you should pay attention to it. Whether at the fashion weeks in Paris and Milan, in the streets, at festivals and certainly also on social media: we see that it is completely hip again to wear your sweater knotted around you. We immediately think of the typical Knokke look with the sweater on the shoulders, but trend-sensitive young people turn their noses up at that. no, the way to go is knotted on their chest with one sleeve over the shoulder and the other under the arm. As if they wrap themselves and present them as a present. TikTok is full of styling videos and hacks for the perfect knot.

Your sweater as armor or armor

The trend of the sweater as an accessory is not new at all. Since 2015 we have seen them appear under the arms and on the chest of celebs and influencers who want to distinguish themselves from everyone else and ensure their status as a style icon. Young people see that on their feed and feel inspired. For them, it’s also a way to differentiate themselves – not just from their less cool peers, but also from their ‘old-fashioned’ parents. Mom and Dad draping their sweaters lightly around their necks? They shrug their shoulders. Then tie it around your waist? That works on their hips. We don’t live in the eighties anymore, do we?

It seems that with each new generation a different way of tying sweaters appears.

It seems that with each new generation a different way of tying sweaters appears. A few seasons ago it was also trendy to drape a sweater very loosely over just one shoulder and take it out on the street. It wasn’t really practical. You didn’t have to try it just like that, making sudden movements or skating with it (a favorite hobby of young people). So that look was not to last.

The styling trick with one sleeve over the shoulder and the other under the arm has more future potential. For example, your sweater or sweater is firmly tightened, like a kind of armor or armor. Perhaps that extra layer is the reason for its increasing popularity. Trend watchers have been proclaiming aloud for years that layers are a kind of fashion answer to our desire for comfort and security. Like a warm blanket that covers you. It may sound far-fetched, but fashion is pure psychology.

Bum bags set the trend

Another reason for the trend is habituation. After systematic exposure to the special look, more and more young people are giving in. They are also now very common to wear something on the chest. Thanks to the immense revival of the fanny packs, also several years ago. The indispensable basic from the nineties was mainly worn in the last century at the height of the pubic bone or behind. Hence its funny Anglo-Saxon name, fanny pack (fanny is slang for vagina and buttocks, ed.).

With the revival of all things 90s, the fanny pack came up again in 2018, in the most diverse guises. Again, it was still widely worn around the waist, but increasingly over the chest. Like a cross-body bag, and like some kind of extra armor. Here too, influencers such as Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber played a starring role in starting and promoting the hype. And that for both women and men, because the fanny pack (or should we speak of ‘chest bag’) is completely unisex and is worn just as often over the torso regardless of gender. It just proves how men’s and women’s fashions are increasingly converging. The ‘No Gender’ movement has many big implications, even in the small details of our outfits. Like how boys and girls tie their sweaters in the same way, for example.

“Pure attention seeking”

Moreover, the look is also very democratic, especially in these times of inflation. Life is expensive enough already. But you’ll have your favorite sweater anyway and it won’t cost you anything. Except maybe some time and effort to master the basics. Social media offers a solution there too. There are plenty of styling hack videos on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok for the coveted ‘sweater-on-the-chest’ look. The possibilities of how to tie your sweater exactly on your chest are very diverse. It all depends on the dedication you want to put into it.

Some cross their sleeves once, very casually. Others tie a complex knot in it. Just as there are many knots in sailing, the same goes for tying sweaters. On TikTok, the method is going viral in which the sleeves are knotted and concealed so beautifully that it looks like you get a kind of ‘box’. In a few steps you learn it yourself according to the rules of the art. First you fold the sweater, then you throw one sleeve over the shoulder, and the other under your armpit. At the height of your chest, fold them over each other and cleverly hide the sleeves.

Seems complicated at first glance? Think of it a bit like tying a tie or silk scarf. It also takes some practice and patience, but once you get the hang of it, it’s child’s play (tip: the mirror is your best friend). Also know that not everyone will admire you for your new look. The jersey on the chest, like just about everything in life, has its rabid pros and cons. The comments on the TikTok videos vary widely. From ‘genius’, ‘original’ and ‘pleasant variety to wear a sweater’ to ‘pure attention seeking’, ‘ridiculous’ and ‘it shouldn’t get any crazier’. But don’t let that spoil the fun. Time to roll up your sleeves!
