The Kings close their tour throughout the country in Gijón | BE Gijón | Today for Today Gijón

The visit to the Principality of Asturias has served as culmination of the tour of Spain that their majesties began in the Canary Islands on March 23 to thank and recognize the efforts of citizens during the pandemic.

The Kings of Spain, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia, arrived before noon at the facilities of Cogersa, the Consortium for Solid Waste Management of Asturias in Serín. With a mask and accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, the President of the Principality was waiting for them, Adrián Barbón, who has welcomed them. Later they have greeted the rest of authorities, the president of the General Meeting, Marcelino Marcos Líndez; the delegate of the Government in Asturias, Delia Losa and the mayor of Gijón, Ana González. Once inside the center, the people in charge have shown them the work carried out in a meeting in which, in addition, they have explained what Cogersa represents, where all kinds of garbage and dumps from the region are collected jointly, the only case in Spain. The consortium manager, Santiago Fernandez, thanked Don Felipe and Doña Letizia for their visit for representing “a recognition to the sector”, in particular, for the work carried out during the state of alarm. The Kings have also wanted to congratulate the workers especially for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have also toured some of the complex plants, including the furnaces where hospital waste is incinerated and where packaging and paper are recycled.

From Cogersa, the kings moved to Gijón where they have visited the exhibition organized on the occasion of 30th anniversary of the Praise of the Horizon, a sculpture by the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida which has become a symbol of the city.

While this was happening at the Elogio, at the Naútico more than a hundred republicans joined to protest the presence of the Kings in Asturias.

The visit to Asturias has included a private lunch in a restaurant in the parish of Deva, in Gijón and was completed in the afternoon at the Fernando Alonso Museum and Circuit, in the municipality of Llanera, where they have been received by the Asturian pilot.
