The inverted Dutch flag: remove it or leave it hanging? | Join the conversation

According to Rijkswaterstaat, the flags on viaducts and along national roads are dangerous in traffic. They can shoot loose, causing flags to fall on cars. In addition, the flags could distract road users: you just look at them and are therefore less focused on traffic. The province of South Holland agrees with Rijkswaterstaat and also removes the flags.

Research

In response to this news, EenVandaag asked its own Opinion Panel of more than 33,000 people whether they agree with this choice. 77 percent are in favor of Rijkswaterstaat removing the inverted flags if they lead to dangerous traffic situations. Not everyone agrees. The flags of 2 out of 10 people are allowed to remain.

Many of the panellists say they understand the farmers’ upside-down flag well and understand their dissatisfaction. Yet 33 percent also indicate that they find it annoying that the Dutch flag is used for protest.

Response

What do the Twitterers think about it? From Rana, those farmer’s flags can disappear.

Claire thinks it’s nonsense that the farmer’s flags are considered dangerous. Joan thinks it’s a good way of demonstrating.
