The intensity of co-operation between Latvian and Belarusian border guards has significantly decreased – in Latvia – News

Although the number of illegal border crossers detained on the Latvian-Belarusian border in recent months is small compared to the situation in Lithuania, the Belarusian border guard is reluctant to communicate with Latvian colleagues on illegal immigration issues.

Petersone pointed out that due to the restrictions of the pandemic, face-to-face meetings are missed, but the exchange of information with evidence of illegal border crossing takes place in writing.

The flow of illegal migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian border has reportedly increased sharply recently. Since the beginning of this year, the total number of detained illegal immigrants has reached 3145-39 times more than in the whole of last year.

In July alone, 2484 illegal border crossings were detected.

Lithuanian officials believe that the Belarussian regime is deliberately facilitating the flow of migrants across the border.

Due to the migration crisis, a state of emergency has been declared in Lithuania.

Meanwhile, the Latvian border guards detained nine Iraqi citizens on Monday in Krāslava region for illegal crossing of the Latvian-Belarusian border.

This year, this is the fifth group of persons detained illegally to cross the eastern border of Latvia, while last year 23 third-country nationals were detained for intentionally illegally crossing the “green” border.

From July 12, the Latvian National Armed Forces have sent national guards to the country’s eastern border to step up measures to deter illegal immigration. The National Guards were sent to the Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian borders.

This decision was made due to the increased flow of illegal migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.
