The Inspiring Story of Abdurrahman bin Auf: From Wealth to Charity

Jakarta

Who doesn’t want to be rich? Almost all people want to be rich so that their life will always be fulfilled and they can buy whatever they want. However, this was not felt by the friend of Rasulullah SAW, Abdurrahman bin Auf.

Abdurrahman bin Auf is a very rich man. He actually wanted to be poor, but failed. As a friend of the prophet, he was very happy to give alms. This habit was carried out because he was worried that his possessions could become a burden in the afterlife.

Abdurrahman bin Auf was born in Mecca in the 10th year, the year of the Elephant or to be precise in 581 AD. Quoting the book ‘The Power of Worship, Business and Jihad of the Rich Companions of the Prophet’ by Ustadz Imam Mubarok bin Ali, Abdurrahman’s age is said to be younger than Rasulullah.

Abdurrahman bin Auf’s real name is Abdu Amru. Rasulullah changed him to Abdurrahman. Abdurrahman received guidance from Allah SWT, two days after Abu Bakar ash-Siddiq converted to Islam. Like the first people who converted to Islam, he also did not escape the torture and pressure from the Quraish infidels.

Abdurrahman was one of those who followed the Prophet’s invitation to emigrate. In Medina, the Prophet brought many brothers to the Muhajirin and Ansar. Like other Muhajirin, Abdurrahman left all his wealth in Mecca so that when he arrived in Medina he had nothing.

Narrated by Anas bin Malik, the Messenger of Allah made Abdurrahman a brother with Sa’ad bin al-Rabi’ al-Anshari when he arrived in Medina. Once, Sa’ad said to Abdurrahman.

“Brother! I am one of the residents of Madinah who has a lot of wealth. So, choose and take it! I also have two wives, see which one attracts your heart, so I can arrange it for you,” said Sa’ad.

Responding to this, Abdurrahman actually asked Sa’ad to show him the location of the market. “May Allah bless you with your wealth and your family. However, show me where your market is,” he said.

So the market was shown, so that Abdurrahman could trade. Abdurrahman’s creativity emerged while trading. He asked his new brother for help to buy less valuable land located next to the market.

Then, the land is divided into plots. Then, anyone can sell on that land without paying rent. When there is a profit from the merchant, he urges them to share the proceeds as sincerely as possible.

Always Fail to Become a Poor Person

Many traders are interested in selling on Abdurrahman’s land. They moved in droves to the new market developed by Abdurrahman bin Auf. This makes the profits multiply. Strangely, the more wealth Abdurrahman had, the more worried he cried.

“Once Rasulullah Sallallahu’alaihi wasallam said, Abdurrahman bin Auf will enter heaven last because he is too rich, so he will be reckoned with the longest. Hearing this, Abdurrahman bin Auf thought hard, how can he become poor so he can enter heaven earlier,” he said.

In order to be poor, Abdurrahman bin Auf once gave away half of his wealth. After that he gave another charity of 40,000 dinars, most of his possessions were obtained from trade.

Abdurrahman bin Auf is also said to have given 200 uqiyah of gold (1 uqiyah is equivalent to approximately 31 grams) to meet logistical needs during the Tabuk war. When there was a call to donate from Rasulullah SAW, he never thought long and hesitated.

Likewise, during the Battle of Badr, the number reached 100 people, he gave compensation of 400 dinars to each veteran. Abdurrahman bin Auf also donated 40 thousand dinars, 500 horses and 1,500 camels to the fighters.

Not only that, he also gave alms by buying almost rotten dates from friends in Medina. All the traders were happy because they could sell their dates, as was Abdurrahman bin Auf who was happy and hoped that he would fall into poverty.

However, suddenly someone came and claimed to be a Yemeni envoy. He reported that his country was suffering from an infectious disease outbreak, so the king sent him to look for rotten dates.

According to him, rotten dates are one of the medicines that can cure this infectious disease. Finally, the envoy of the Yemeni king bought up all the dates belonging to Abdurrahman bin Auf at a price 10 times the price of ordinary dates.

His generosity did not make Abdurrahman bin ‘Auf fall into poverty, in fact his wealth continued to increase. When Abdurrahman bin Auf gave up all his wealth to fall into poverty, at that time Allah gave him many times more wealth.

For him, the best legacy left to his family when he dies is not property or wealth, but the teachings of Islam and the example of the Prophet Muhammad. It’s not surprising that he is loved by many other friends. Moreover, he contributed a lot of his wealth to Islam.

Abdurrahman bin Auf died when he was 75 years old (some say 72 years), in 31 H. However, other opinions say 32 H. He was buried in the Baqi cemetery which was led by Uthman bin Affan based on his will. He left behind 28 sons and 8 daughters. Abdurrahman bin ‘Auf is included in the list of 10 companions of the Prophet who are guaranteed to enter heaven.
