The Importance of Abdominal Circumference and Visceral Fat for Body Health

CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta – Not a few people only focus on how to lose weight, without paying attention to the impact on health, including the focus on body mass index or BMI.

Doctor Nadia Alaydrus, who studied Masters in Anti Aging and Aesthetic Medicine at Padjadjaran University, reminded the public not only to pay attention to normal body mass index (BMI) but also abdominal circumference to maintain body health.

“BMI really needs to be maintained within the normal range, namely 18-25. But apart from BMI, we also need to be aware of the abdominal circumference, for women it should not be more than 80 cm, for men it should not be more than 90 cm,” he explained at the launch event MyFit+ in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 11 2023.

Nadia says, fat in the stomach is also called visceral fat Too much can cause the stomach to become distended or the stomach circumference to enlarge, which can be dangerous because it interferes with the performance of organs such as the intestines and heart.

He gave an example, in digestive organs such as the intestines there is a movement to process food or peristalsis. If thick fat covers the intestinal area, it will make it difficult for peristaltic movements to occur.

“When the heart is accumulating visceral fat, it should have a more free pumping rhythm, which ends up having more difficulty,” said Nadia.

Visceral fat is said to be one of the causes of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes or type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and others.

Nadia continued, apart from BMI or body mass index and abdominal circumference, people, especially adults, also need to keep their heart rate at 60 to 100 beats per minute.

“Don’t go too fast or above 100. If it is above 100, you need to ask whether it is because of smoking or lack of sleep, drinking coffee. Drinking coffee is fine as long as it is within reasonable limits,” he said.

According to him, in order to maintain all these things, implementing a healthy lifestyle is important. This includes a healthy diet, eight hours of rest a day following a circadian pattern and regular physical activity.

Especially for physical activity, walking can be an option. This activity has a number of benefits, including healthy heart and helping burn calories.

“If you are walking from the office to home where conditions are polluted and uncomfortable, you can take a walk every afternoon in the house complex area for 15 – 30 minutes,” explained Nadia.

In a week, it is recommended that a person do 150 minutes of physical activity which can be divided into five days with 30 minutes per day.

“What we need is at least cardio exercise and walking is considered one of the cardio exercises, around 150 minutes a week. If you do it regularly it will definitely be good for your health,” said Nadia.
