The Impact of War and Shipping Challenges on Russia’s Grain Exports

The Russian Federation does not have a sufficient number of sea grain carriers, and the interest of traders in wheat from Russia is falling against the background of the escalation of the war.

The lack of ships in the Russian Federation and the decline in the interest of large grain traders in doing business with Moscow increases the price of transporting Russian wheat abroad at a time when the war in Ukraine is going on near the Black Sea transport routes.

Writes about it Reuters.

The publication notes that the Russian dictator promised to supply grain to Africa after Moscow’s withdrawal from the grain deal, but this does not happen.

Ukraine’s attack on the warship “Olenegorsky miner” in the bay of Novorossiysk (a large grain and oil hub in the Black Sea), as well as on a tanker near the Kerch Strait, only aggravated the situation for the Russian Federation.

Experts also talk about the possible strengthening of the so-called hidden anti-Russian sanctions on the world grain market, which may lead to an increase in the costs for the aggressor country for the charter of ships and their insurance.

While maritime agricultural exports are not subject to direct international sanctions imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Moscow says the restrictions placed on its banks and individuals are “disguised restrictions” on the food trade.

According to Reuters sources, Russia is now negotiating with small shipping companies and wants to create a shadow “grain fleet” to avoid sanctions. Vessels for it are chartered mainly in Turkey and China. Requests for the lease of grain carriers from Russian exporters increased by 40 percent over the month.

But these steps will not help the Russian Federation in the near future to export its grain in the volumes that existed during the “Black Sea Initiative”. Against this background, the price of it is growing, the newspaper notes.

Recall that the supply of goods to Turkey from the Russian Federation over the past month collapsed by 36% against the backdrop of Moscow’s failure of the grain agreement.

We also wrote that an unmanned boat in the Kerch Strait attacked Russian tanker SIG, which is under US sanctions.

Earlier in the port of Novorossiysk, a hole from a drone received large landing ship of the Russian Navy “Olenegorsky miner”.
