Electric car have different characters and specifications compared to petrol cars. That is why it is recommended that non-emission vehicles use special tires. So, what happens if you are ‘forced’ to use regular tires?
Mukiat Sutikno as President Director of PT Bridgestone Tire Indonesia (BTI) said that electric cars can actually run on ordinary tires. However, the effect is not good for vehicles.
“So if you ask whether you can do it or not, you can. But it’s not ideal,” said Mukiat when met by media crew at the Bridgestone factory in Karawang, West Java, Wednesday (15/11).

He explained that special tire technology for electric cars is different from ordinary tires. Because, these components are designed to be quieter and suitable for instant speed.
“Actually, it’s like this, to be more optimal, we know that electric cars are quiet. So of course, if it’s an electric car, it must have silent technology to make it quieter,” he said.
“Even though our advanced technology is actually very suitable for electric cars and is very smooth, electric cars still have better grip,” he added.

Furthermore, Mukiat then explained the effects that would occur if electric cars were still used using ordinary tires. He said, this would affect electricity consumption which would become more wasteful.
“So actually ordinary tires are okay for electric cars. But, you have to know the effects, they can be heavier and use more electricity. Apart from that, (the car) becomes noisy,” he said.
It is known that Bridgestone has sold special tires for electric cars on the global market, namely Turanza Eco. Reportedly, they will also soon sell similar tires in Indonesia at the end of this year. However, it is not yet known what the name and model will be.
