The Impact of the Israel-Hamas Conflict on World Oil Prices and Indonesia’s Fuel Imports

Jakarta

The conflict between Israel and Hamas will have an impact on increasing world oil prices. This was also triggered by the need for oil ahead of winter.

The increase in crude oil prices can affect fuel prices. The government is also pushing for the issuance of regulations governing Pertalite buyers.

The Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tutuka Ariadji, explained that the current impact of the Middle East war has not had a major impact on world oil prices. However, if the war lasts for a long time it will affect Indonesia’s crude oil imports and fuel imports.

“Until today the impact is still not significant even though we know that the price of oil is approaching US$ 90 per barrel, but if this continues long enough I think it will have an effect,” he said, quoted from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources website, Wednesday (18/10/2023).

According to him, the increase in the price of Indonesian crude oil (Indonesia Crude Price/ ICP) will not only affect the increase in crude prices in Indonesia, it will also affect fuel prices in the community. This is because Indonesia imports both, namely crude oil and fuel, with almost the same percentage.

The government is also encouraging the immediate issuance of a revision of Presidential Regulation Number 191 of 2014 which will become a reference regulation for the distribution of subsidized fuel that is more targeted. This revision will regulate the detailed criteria for vehicles that can fill Pertalite and is also currently reviewing differences in the price of Pertalite according to the type of vehicle.

“I urge you, Pertalite is for people who need it, so if you can afford it, don’t use it because it’s not intended,” said Tutuka.

So far, Pertamina is testing restrictions on purchasing Pertalite, especially for four-wheeled vehicles in several areas. Every buyer is required to have a Quick Response (QR) Code to be scanned by gas station officers before making a purchase. The trial was carried out in 41 cities and districts spread across three provinces, namely Aceh, Bangka Belitung and Bengkulu. Trials were also carried out in Timika, Papua.

For information, consumer users who have not received a QR Code, apart from registering directly for the appropriate subsidy program which can be accessed via the website or via the MyPertamina application, can also register at around 1,300 offline registration booth points spread throughout Indonesia.
