The Impact of Solar Eclipses on Clouds and Climate Engineering Efforts: New Study Finds Surprising Results

Cekricek.id – When a solar eclipse occurs, the dramatic view for a few moments turns out to have a greater impact on our planet. One surprising effect is that the clouds disappear quickly, even when only 15 percent of the Sun is covered by the Moon’s position.

Of course, not all types of clouds disappear. However, a recent study led by Victor Trees of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute and Delft University of Technology was published in the journal Naturefound that shallow cumulus clouds that are generally over land moved very quickly when the eclipse occurred.

According to Victor Trees, these findings have implications for future climate engineering efforts. “If a solar eclipse occurs with technological solutions in the future, this could have an impact on clouds,” explained Victor Trees. “Reducing clouds could worsen the impacts of climate engineering because clouds can reflect sunlight and thereby help cool the earth,” he added.

With its position on the earth’s surface, knowing the behavior of clouds during a solar eclipse is not easy. However, this is very important according to Victor Trees. This is because one of the proposed solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change is to block some of the sun’s rays from reaching the earth’s lower atmosphere.

For this reason, the research team is looking for a way to count clouds from above using satellites. The lunar shadow correction method during the eclipse is applied to make cloud top reflectivity calculations more accurate.

“Most solar eclipses are partial, where there is still a lot of light outside the shadows,” explains Victor Trees. “In this partial eclipse, the satellite still received enough reflected sunlight to measure the clouds reliably after making corrections,” he added.

The method was then applied to data collected during 3 previous solar eclipses on the African continent between 2005 and 2016. The results were quite surprising, cumulus clouds began to disappear in large numbers when only 15 percent of the Sun was covered. Even after the solar eclipse was over, the cumulus clouds did not return.

The exact reason why this happens is still unknown. So the team carried out simulations with DALES cloud modeling software. Simulation results show that when sunlight is blocked, the ground surface becomes cooler, resulting in reduced upward flow of warm air from the ground surface.

Whereas the flow of warm air that goes up is very important in the process of cumulus cloud formation. The air currents carry water vapor and condense into droplets as they rise to cooler altitudes, forming cumulus clouds.

So when the ground cools and there is no more upward air flow, cumulus clouds cannot survive. New cumulus clouds form again when the Sun shines and begins to warm the surface of the earth.

This effect only occurs on land, because the ocean does not cool quickly enough to have the same effect. Even though they are not rain clouds, cumulus clouds can turn into rain clouds.

The research team’s findings indicate that climate engineering efforts to block sunlight are actually having a negative impact on weather patterns. Therefore, further research is needed, according to scientists.
