The Impact of Russia’s Withdrawal from Grain Deal on Ukraine’s Economy

Aug 19, 2023 at 1:07 PM Update: 22 minutes ago

Russia’s decision to walk out of grain deal negotiations has hit Ukraine’s economy. In the first month after the deal was struck, the country exported a third less grain.

By pulling the plug on the grain deal, Russia has hit a major Ukrainian source of income. The deal made it possible to transport Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

The country exported 3.2 million tons of grains, vegetable oils and meat in the four weeks before August 15, the news agency writes. Bloomberg. In May and June – when the grain deal was still in force – it was 4.4 and 4.8 million tonnes respectively.

It is proving difficult for Ukraine to find alternative ways to get the food products across the border. For example, it is being examined whether it is possible to export the grain over the river Danube, but that is proving difficult, says operational director Olena Vorona of AgroTrade Group.

First of all, according to her, it now takes four times as long to get something to the river due to the traffic on the roads. River ports have also been attacked more often since the end of the grain deal.

Ukraine’s grain facilities have been a target of Russia since the start of the war

Hitting Ukrainian grain facilities has been one of the Kremlin’s tactics since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Since February last year, 44 silos, warehouses and other grain-related buildings have already been hit, the British Ministry of Defense reported on Saturday.

Since the ending of the grain deal, these types of attacks have become more common.
