The Impact of Polarization in American Society on the 2024 Presidential Election

“Probably, Trump and Biden will again be the two candidates who will compete for the presidency in the United States. The two polarized halves of American society with the inspired radical cores will practically determine America’s choice of the next president, which is risky for America itself and for the world at large”.

This is the opinion of the political scientist Associate Professor Ognyan Minchev.

He emphasized to BNR that the polarization in American society is growing and this has been going on for more than a decade and a half. In any democratic system in which society becomes polarized at both ends of the spectrum, this to some extent blocks the channels for the elevation of leaders in the political contest of the democratic process, he explained. And added:

“Instead of a large part of the citizenry being interested, and there being an overlap in the interests and goals of the different political forces and personalities competing, polarization puts the political choice in the hands of the inspired, extreme, radical party cores. This is still the situation in the US today . It is best seen in the enormous popularity that Donald Trump has among the radical fringes of the Democratic Party, which is currently the majority of the party.”

According to him, the “moderate Biden” is an unspoken obstacle to the escalation of political choices in the left fringes of the Democratic Party. According to him, Biden has problems with his candidacy because of his age and health.

In the “Saturday 150” program, the political scientist emphasized that Trump’s return to power promises a period of development for the United States, in which it is not known how Trump will approach the country’s problems and the world’s problems. No one is sure how Trump will approach change and the approaches he will choose to make it happen, he believes.

“These are Biden’s chances – the people who are in the moderate spectrum and who are currently disappointed and withdrawn from politics, will still decide to go and vote for the lesser evil,” explained Prof. Minchev.

According to him, at this stage there is no figure emerging to fight Trump for the Republican nominations.

The political scientist also noted that America’s role in the world is not simply to be a “world policeman”. America has an important role in the system of international relations, and if it ceases to exist, it will mean a catastrophe for American economic interests and a very large vacuum in international relations in which chaos will settle, he warned.

“On the one hand, America does not want to pay for the security of Europe, but on the other hand, it cannot afford not to control Europe, because in Europe lie basic prerequisites for American national security. The war in Ukraine is a very good example of this. If the US is absent, Russia will receive carte blanche to do things in Europe that will be in direct conflict not only with the interests of the Europeans, but also with the interests of America itself. It is in this dilemma that every American president will find himself,” explained the political scientist.

According to him, it is high time for Europe to take matters into its own hands and decide if it has common problems of its security and try to come to an agreement with America.
