The Impact of Parliamentary Continuity on Electoral Distrust: Insights from Trend Agency Sociologist

The continuity of the parliament, which was enshrined in the constitutional changes, risks increasing distrust in the electoral process. He expressed this opinion before BNR Evelina Slavkova from Trend Agency.

“I’m not sure if the continuity of the parliament will be ok with us – not so much legislatively, but rather symbolically,” she commented and reminded of the great distrust in the electoral system.

“Those people who have resigned, they have to go and we have to go and vote for others – and in fact they will be the ones making the elections. That to me is a problem. Purely symbolically it will reinforce the feeling that people something is wrong with the elections”.

“It’s pouring into the mill of something new,” says Evelina Slavkova.

“Whether it’s going to be the president or somebody else – just the guy who comes out and says, ‘You’ve gone too far,’ ‘Enough,’ ‘A little more moderation,’ will certainly be successful. Surely this situation in one way or another generates energy into something new. We also saw it through the deepening lack of activity on the part of the Bulgarian society to come out and vote,” said the sociologist.

In the program “Before everyone” Evelina Slavkova commented and the study of the “Trend” Agency for the year 2023according to which Bulgarians feel better and look forward to the new year with greater confidence.

“The data tell me that the issue with Covid is over. In our consciousness, it no longer exists in any way. This period of 2-3 years has simply ended in the Bulgarian consciousness,” she said.

Another interpretation of the data is “No war happened to us,” added Slavkova. According to her, after the start of the war in Ukraine, people had the feeling that something could happen here as well.

“The war has become a kind of background. It is mentioned, but this centralization is not there,” said Slavkova.

She also noted concerns about inflation and people’s incomes.

There is also political stabilization, she pointed out. And he wished that politics would also become a background for us like the war, although he does not expect this to happen soon.

“There are European elections in a few months. Maybe soon we won’t have a year without elections, which in one way or another mobilizes the public’s consciousness to focus politically, despite the high levels of refusal of people to go vote,” commented Slavova.
