Hot flashes, mood swings, sleep problems and even heart rhythm disorders: complaints that many women face during menopause. October 18 is World Menopause Day. OLVG gynecologist Dorenda van Dijken has set up a day full of information and activities at OLVG location West.

“Whether you have complaints or not, the menopause has an impact on your health. Talking about the menopause and ensuring that you receive the right information about this important phase of life is therefore extremely important. It can reduce complaints and sometimes also prevent them,” says gynecologist Dorenda van Dijken. She has been trying to remove the taboo from menopause for 25 years.

Specialists share knowledge and tips
In the hall of OLVG location West, various specialists will be ready for visitors at an information market on Wednesday, October 18. A hospital psychiatrist, internist and gynecologists, among others, share their knowledge and tips. General practitioners and menopause consultants are also present. Cardiologist Janneke Wittekoek explains the impact of menopause on the heart and what you can do in case of complaints.

Women’s health undervalued
Women’s health has been undervalued for years, so it is time for extra attention to be paid to it,” says Dorenda van Dijken. “There are so many women who encounter things during their cycle and during menopause: depression, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating. And it’s a bit typical of a woman to think: I shouldn’t act like that. Women often struggle in silence. Now that it is becoming more open to discussion, the women are coming out with their stories. That’s so important.’

The information day on Wednesday, October 18 will be festively opened by Caroline Tensen at 1 p.m. She wrote a book about her own experiences during menopause. The information afternoon lasts until 5 p.m.
