The identity of the head of the spy group, who worked for Russia, has been revealed

Dozens of searched addresses, numerous recordings of secret meetings, conversations, counting and handing over money – this is the balance after the action of the prosecutor’s office and SANS on the spy affair. As the leader of the group, the prosecution points to a former military intelligence official. According to information from bTV it is about Ivan Iliev, and his wife is in the group.

The other four are current and ex-military at various levels in the system, two of them are active, and one is currently the director of the Parliament’s classified registry. According to unofficial information of “24 Chasa”, it was about Lyubomir Medarov.

The difference with the previous spy scandals is that we are not talking about foreign citizens who are intelligence about their country, but about our military, passing information to another country.

A story like from a spy movie, but with real participants from the Ministry of Defense and the parliament, who pass secret information to a foreign country for money.

“The participants in the group are, unfortunately, employees who have sworn allegiance to their country,” said Elin Aleksov of the Military Appellate Prosecutor’s Office.

The spy group was created by a former military intelligence official whom investigators called “Resident.” “His main task was to build an illegal network of agents, for this purpose he recruited people who in connection with their official duties had access to classified information of the Republic of Bulgaria, NATO and the EU,” said prosecutor’s spokeswoman Siika Mileva.

The Russian-trained spy joined the work of all participants, from the military to his wife.

“She enjoys the trust of Russian diplomats accredited in our country. She has played the role of mediator between the resident and employees of the Russian Embassy, passing information and money,” Mileva added.

Recordings from the investigation show how the “Resident” explains how to disguise and transmit information during meetings in restaurants, tennis practice or in his car. Including how to break the SIM cards on their phones if they are caught. Records also show the recording of documents from the military’s office computers, counting money and exchanging currency at exchange offices.

“One of the participants in the group tried to escape, which once again confirms that he is afraid of what will follow as punishment,” said Elin Aleksov of the Military Appellate Prosecutor’s Office.

It was the resident who tried to escape arrest during the action, but was caught in the area of the Russian embassy, bTV claims.

Five of the detainees remain in custody for 72 hours, and one is on bail.
