The hospital’s intensive care unit is fifty years old

This special anniversary was commemorated in the framework of a scientific day organized by the department, during which lectures were given by recognized experts in the intensive care profession in the ground floor auditorium of the hospital. The event consisted of two sections: in the first round, the attendees were told about the history of the field. It was not an easy task for the speakers to summarize or even highlight one defining memory from the perspective of fifty years, but they provided the audience with all the more interesting things.

From ether narcosis to the independent department

There was a defining case in October 1846 when John Collins Warren removed a tumor from his patient’s neck using ether anesthesia. This attracted the attention of the world, and a few months later, in February 1847, thanks to János Balassa, the first operation with ether anesthesia was performed in our country – Prof. Dr. Lajos Bogár PhD spoke about this in his chronological lecture on the emergence of Hungarian anesthesiology and intensive therapy. As early as the end of the 19th century, representatives of individual medical specialties began to found separate scientific societies, this body of anesthesiology was formed in the 1950s. At that time, they still believed that the professional development of surgery would provide them with new challenges, which is why an important milestone in their professional independence was when, in 1957, anesthesiology was given an independent department in a hospital in the capital. Over time, the example was followed in other big cities, and in 1973 independent anesthesiology was established in Szolnok and Dunaújváros, whose five-decade anniversary can now be celebrated.

He came for a mandatory hospital internship

In 1982, a 23-year-old student of the Semmelweis University of Medical Sciences came to the Dunaújváros intensive care unit to complete his mandatory hospital internship. His professional work has tied him here ever since, from 2000 he was assigned as head of department, until he was appointed the hospital’s general director. Perhaps many have already realized that Dr. It is about Lajos Jobbágy, who spoke with gratitude about his former predecessors in his presentation. As he said, he was able to learn a lot from them as a career starter, and the entire hospital collective also provided guidance in his work. He encouraged everyone to look for a medium where they can constantly learn something new and which also serves their own development.

You can never completely break away

The beginning of his medical career is also linked to anesthesiology. Also Ágnes Máté, who strengthened this department from 1998. He shared kind and humorous personal stories about his years here, which showed that in addition to exemplary professional work, the collective was also characterized by cohesion. In 2006, Ágnes Máté became the founding chief physician of the Emergency Department, which he has managed ever since. He believes that he sees similarities compared to the work done at SBO, so you can’t really be completely separated from anesthesiology.

The speakers came to the jubilee event representing the University of Pécs, Medial Kft., Semmelweis University, the National Blood Service and the Fejér County Szent György University Teaching Hospital. In the second part of the academic day, professionalism was given the main role and topics such as the possibilities of regional anesthesia today or feeding methods in the intensive care unit were discussed.
