“These tubes in the nose go about 15 liters per minute, with HFNO you can go between 50 and 60 liters per minute, so the dead space in the lungs is ventilated by oxygen, and therefore even the partially damaged lung tissue can much more to use, “Petr Arenberger, the hospital’s director, explained to the News.

There are currently 28 patients on high-flow oxygen therapy devices. The hospital had fifteen and bought another hundred. However, they will find their use even after the coronavirus pandemic subsides.

“The ability to give this comfortable oxygenation is certainly beneficial in normal operation,” the director added, adding that artificial lung ventilation is a great burden on damaged lungs, and the new devices allow more patients to survive the administration of oxygen that might otherwise be partially hurt.

Paramedics test the device on a special dummy that can faithfully mimic the functions of life – it can breathe, blink, make sounds, such as coughing, which is realistic for covid patients.

“Healthcare professionals feel that they are with a real patient, they will set up oxygen therapy correctly and they can see on the vital signs monitor that their therapy has improved, ie the patient’s vital parameters will improve,” explained Michael Stern, head of the FNKV anesthesia and resuscitation clinic. .

More than 150 medics and volunteers help with covid patients, as well as a specialized team of nurses and doctors.
