The Hogwarts Legacy takes place at the perfect time for a fun goblet of fire reference.

The upcoming video game Hogwarts Legacy is perfect for a fun reference to Ron Weasley’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. While the Harry Potter books and movies are mostly set in the 1990s, the video game is set 100 years back in time.

Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1890s. This way, the developers will be able to avoid continuity errors and other potential story problems, as well as allow the game to tell a story largely independent of what has already been created in Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. While that means Hogwarts Legacy won’t feature most of the franchise’s recognizable characters (aside from the ghosts that roam Hogwarts castle), it does create the opportunity for some unique Easter eggs.

As noted by the user Reddit Mindless_Cat_, the setting of Hogwarts Legacy in the 1890s makes it a perfect reference to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where the antagonistic Slytherin student Draco Malfoy taunts Harry Potter’s best friend and Gryffindor student Ron Weasley for his formal dress . Malfoy notes that he “was certainly very fashionable in the year like that in the 1890s”. It’s entirely possible that Malfoy picked a random year to make fun of the old Weasley robe, but it’s also possible that he was accurate in his lines.

Ron made a quick move to hide his sleeve, but Malfoy was quicker; he grabbed the cuff and pulled. Check! bellowed Malfoy in ecstasy, shaking his robes in front of Crabbe and Goyle. “Weasley, you’re not wearing this, are you?” This, of course, was very fashionable in the year like that in the 1890s …

Ron dons his formal suit to the Yule Ball, a Christmas ball that takes place during the Triwizard Tournament. The tournament was banned in the late 1700s due to the large number of students who died during it, so Hogwarts Legacy will not have it. However, that doesn’t mean Ron’s robes can’t be included in the game, especially if Malfoy’s observation about 1890 turns out to be accurate.

While there won’t be a Yule Ball, there may be other balls at the Hogwarts Legacy where characters need to be fully dressed. And as a result of a series of events, it would be nice to see how this dress ends up in a Diagon Alley shop and, a hundred years later, falls into Mrs. Weasley’s hands. While most of Ron’s Harry Potter possessions come from his older brothers, Mrs Weasley is said to have bought the evening gown from a second hand shop, so this could be a fun nod to Ron’s books and films.
