The historic restaurateur Paola, struck down by an illness, managed the Averau refuge

CORTINA – Messages of condolence are coming from all over Italy to the Siorpaes family, of the Averau refuge, for the sudden death of Paola De Lorenzi. The woman passed away in the night between Sunday and Monday, struck by an illness, at the end of an intense day of work. The intervention of the White Cross rescuers, assisted by the local section of the National Alpine Rescue Corps, with an off-road vehicle and a doctor was of no use.

ENERGETIC WOMAN
Paola De Lorenzi was 60 years old, on 11 April. She leaves her husband Sandro, the children Matteo and Margot, the grandchildren. The date of the funeral has not yet been fixed. Her professional skills, the energy lavished in her work, the human skills of sympathy and communication have made her known and appreciated in Cortina and among the guests of the basin. With “Sandrone” and Paola Siorpaes, the Averau refuge has become one of the reference points in catering and accommodation in Ampezzo. Purchased forty years ago the structure, at 2,413 meters above sea level, from the previous owners, opened in 1982, the couple has repeatedly expanded and improved the shelter, up to the radical makeover, about ten years ago. It reopened to the public on December 19, 2010, after complete renovation and transformation.

THE LOCAL PHILOSOPHY
“We did it to offer an even better service – Sandro and Paola said then – to adapt the refuge to the needs of customers, even those who frequent the high mountains”. The two large dormitories were transformed into smaller and more comfortable lodgings; we worked in the bar area and on the terrace, with particular attention to the kitchen, the reign of Paola. Until the other night. A few words appeared on the Facebook page of the refuge yesterday, only to warn that the Averau will be closed for a few days, due to the serious bereavement that has affected the family. Immediately many messages arrived, sent by the people of Cortina, but also from all over Italy and abroad, by hikers who, in forty years, have known and appreciated the professional skills and human skills of Paola and her family .

MORE MOURNING
This mourning affects the Ampezzo community again, only a few days after the death of Laura Constantini Ghea, who for many years managed the Biella refuge, at the Croda del Becco, with her husband Guido Salton. Died at the age of 71 on 12 August, in San Vigilio di Marebbe, she was greeted for the last time by her fellow villagers on the eve of August 15th, in the parish church of Saints Philip and James of Cortina.
