The highest price paid in Italy for a bottle of wine: 100,000 euros

One hundred thousand euros for a bottle of wine. A record for Italy. As less and less wine is consumed due to restaurant closures during the lockdown, collectors’ investments do not stop. Anyone willing to spend that much for a bottle will certainly not uncork it at Christmas dinner. He will keep it waiting for the price to rise again (the Liv ex, the British site that follows the world prices of the great labels, reports that the Fine Wine 100 index from October to the highest levels of the last 10 years).

The one hundred thousand euro bottle a jeroboam, a double magnum, or 3 liters. The Romane Conti Grand Cru label, vintage 1990. The company is one of the most prestigious in the world: 25 hectares in Vosne-Romane, Burgundy. According to the Wine-Searcher website, it has long produced the most expensive wine in the world, with an average price of $ 19,574 per bottle and a maximum price of $ 95,153. Up to the summit of 558,000 dollars for a 1945 vintage bottle (when only 600 bottles were produced) in an auction organized by Sotheby’s in October two years ago.

Very limited production. Market rarity can cause prices to rise by up to 25% per year. The double magnum is equivalent to four 0.75-liter bottles, the value increased by the singularity of the format.

The auction was held by Bolaffi. A long session, 11 hours, with almost half a thousand participants.

The double magnum of Romane Conti, explains the CEO of the auction house Filippo Bolaffi, was

a lot that cannot be found, considering that the most famous cru of this very rare Domaine in its normal format and that of double magnums in Italy one cares every decade. 1990 was a particularly prestigious year.

In total, Bolaffi collected 835,000 euros in the auction, selling 99% of the lots. The prices of Italian wines are excellent. Among others, a 1955 Barolo Monfortino Riserva in the Brenta quarter format (13.05 liters) changed hands for 20,000 euros.
