The heart of the actress

The work rereads and adapts the classic tale of Gothic literature “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Alla Poe and is set in a kind of cell or bedroom of what appears to be a mental institution.

Between poetic delusions that ask for lucidity, the protagonist lends herself to telling us a story that saw her as victim and perpetrator. She is the victim of abandonment by her mother at the age of eleven and placed in the domestic service of a lonely and wealthy man, executioner while she kills him.

In these themes, the rereading resolves some ambiguities in Poe’s story, such as the relationship between the narrator and the old man, his here and now, and his final destination. There is character development work very typical of playwriting that the original genre may not require.

The protagonist goes from trying to demonstrate her sanity to fully assuming a guilt that has not given her and will not give her a break.

Rosario Correa shows a seamless performance, managing the acting resources (voice, body expression, immersion in character) in an extraordinary way and makes us think of the heroism of a person, surrounded by critical eyes, like what disturbs Sara so much much -Ramona, behind the truculence of a story perhaps too respectful of the (translated) language of the time, but which in no way detracts from the ostentation it makes.

With the quality of these propositions, to which other technical details such as installations, music and lighting add efficacy, the Concord cast demonstrated a commitment to theater that new audiences are recognizing and rewarding with their presence.

Leaving the room, “When all the world was asleep” resonates in us like the passion that animates it.
