The initiative to reform the health law on voluntary abortion does not take into account health personnel, who must also be prepared under the psychological, ethical, political and moral aspects, not being ready to interrupt a pregnancy, assured the President of the Guerrero College of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Adán Oliveros Ceballos.
Consulted by telephone on the position of activists, legislators and officials who consider conscientious objectors in hospitals to be the main obstacle to accessing the right to decide, he considered that a law that does not take into account infrastructure, psychological containment and will be unenforceable.
The gynecologist and assisted reproduction biologist (in vitro fertilization) explained that the legal termination of pregnancy (ILE) is already regulated, when it is and when it is not. Decriminalization in the Penal Code of Guerrero is up to 12 weeks of gestation.
“Here is what they are treating and it seems that they are taking it as an obstruction, these are conscientious objector medical and nursing staff, they see it as an obstacle for women to have access to this service. It is what they want to break that there are no objecting doctors ”.
She confirmed that women have the right to make a free decision without objection, without being questioned about the reasons for making such a decision. On the other hand, one should ask why the medical or nursing staff opposes it, “because, as the woman has the right, so does the doctor, since in conscience and in theory he was trained for the conservation of the afterlife”.
Furthermore, she stressed that no one observes whether the place where the woman is sent to receive the service has the technical, infrastructural and personnel conditions to terminate a pregnancy.
“There are no gynecologists or general practitioners who terminate pregnancy, with these characteristics.”
He clarified that doctors perform curettage for emergency reasons, “and there will be doctors who will commit negligence for economic purposes and clandestinely.”
But in healthcare, he emphasized that there are maternity, obstetric bleeding, and non-ILE forms.
He considered that the Ministry of Health should prepare doctors in the social, political and psychological knowledge of the matter, because being an abortion is not the essence of their profession, and carries consequences of being stigmatized because they refuse to abort, or if you accept, they will be singled out as “abortionists”, the unethical.
He insisted that the law must be designed for its applicability, otherwise it will not be effective. He also said that the provisions of the employment contract should be modified to this end and that a comprehensive review of sexual and reproductive health issues should be carried out.
“Because if you give them the key to perform abortions, they will increase, as sexually transmitted diseases are freed, with the distribution of contraceptives”, because pregnancy counseling, epidemiological surveillance, contraceptive methods or sexual health campaigns do not work of the state sector.
She felt that women who are going to have surgery should know that a curettage (scraping the inside of the uterus to collect tissue) has consequences such as infertility and serious complications, not just from the removal of the uterus and uterus , even until death.
In cases where a pregnancy is terminated, the decision should be complied with once she has been informed, and sexual and reproductive health programs should ideally work.
He believes that the initiative known to the press has many shortcomings, and they should collect opinions from collegiate groups.
Regarding the use of pills indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO), he specified that it is not a legal procedure, it only causes the cervix to soften, “this behavior is precisely what causes the complications, the use of pills for the bleeding does not ensure the total expulsion of the abortifacient product, there are regularly placental remains which cause the woman to become infected”.
Therefore, he assured that ILE will be an invasive procedure that includes anesthesia, which is why they are asking for qualified personnel. “(With the pills) the woman trusts herself, she continues to expel clots and hemorrhages and complications arise. One thing is what they say (the activists), another is the practice”.
He clarified that the law is good, as long as it is completed, because it is not just a question of sending women to health services, which is opposed by a group of doctors, because, “as soon as they arrive, they round her up, tell her, come tomorrow, pass . There are no manuals, policies or guidelines. It is a good principle that starts from a political question, but the applicability is another”.
Therefore, the authority of the sector should go to the hospitals, create the pregnancy termination form, take the models from advanced countries, because “if something happens, the doctor is legally punished and stigmatized. If the abortion is complicated under the best conditions, there is a penalty in medical practice”.
She insisted that gynecologists weren’t trained to do pregnancy switches; and those who provide this service must receive training with psychological, ethical, political and moral aspects”. You pointed out that ILE is not in the gynecology books.
He underlined the willingness of this college to collaborate with the government on the technical aspect, with a bioethics committee, to pay, not to hinder, “the Guerrero medical group is willing to improve the law, to pay so that it works and which has the results that allow for the best reproductive health of the Guerrero woman.”
He criticized that a state criminalization of abortion is artificial insemination against the will of the woman, which does not occur, “at least in the 35 years that I have been dedicated to inseminations, I have never heard of or seen a woman forced to an insemination clinic, that’s inconsistent.’
