The Graals company placed in liquidation, the project of medieval park in Chartres is suspended

The founder and CEO of the company, Raphaël Geslan, announced in a press release published on his Facebook page that he had declared Graals in default of payment with the commercial court of Le Mans. After a hearing, in December 2019, the company was placed in compulsory liquidation.

The closing decision of the company Graals and its subsidiaries, Graals Production and Graals Formation, is postponed until June 2021, following a decision of the Commercial Court of Le Mans rendered on June 16.

A medieval amusement park could open at the gates of Chartres in 2023

In his press release, Raphaël Geslan writes: “The Graals company ceases its activities and withdraws from the project to develop a medieval park in the Chartres metropolitan area.”

The CEO of Graals evokes “the length of administrative delays” as well as the choice of “one of the first financial partners of Graals to withdraw from the project” as factors which led to the suspension of payment.

The medieval park project therefore suspended

Graals had a project of an “immersive and interactive” medieval park, which was to be established in the agglomeration of Chartres, by 2023 or 2024. The company turned to Chartres Métropole after having carried out, for four years, studies on a site in Cherré, in Sarthe, before abandoning this site.

“We had to start from scratch in Chartres, plan for three more years and this new deadline discouraged one of the key partners” explains Raphaël Geslan in his press release.

The historic park was to be established on 150 hectares of land and counted on nearly 2 million visitors per year, which would have made it the third largest amusement park in France, behind Disneyland Paris and Puy du Fou. The project represented a cost of 275 million euros.

The CEO of Graals “sincerely hopes that the project will be resumed”. “I am still convinced of its relevance and of the opportunity it represents for the Chartres region”, he writes.

On the agglomeration side, the project can survive

Jean-Pierre Gorges, president of Chartres Métropole, said he was “surprised by the liquidation of the three Grail companies” on Monday, October 12. He adds: “Often, it is not the first who has the idea who realizes the project. Maybe others will be able to do it. The know-how, others have it.”
He does not bury the amusement park project (medieval or not) in the agglomeration: “Graals was answered when the company had launched an appeal to the municipalities. It needed acceptable and accessible land. All the work. preliminary work has been done but we have not incurred any costs. With the A154 project and the future interchange between Lèves and Poisvilliers, we have planned to install an activity zone at this location. We have included it in the diagram of territorial coherence (Scot) and it does not go against the landscape directive which protects the view cones on the cathedral. “
