“The government has to act now. It can’t be in episodes ”

The president of the CIP praises the decision made in the last few hours by the European Commission, but says that the support from the Portuguese government continues to fall short of the problem that Portuguese companies face almost alone.

CIP considers the decision taken by Brussels to approve two state support schemes worth EUR 13 billion, which can finally be made available to Portuguese companies, to be positive.

“The decisions of the European Commission go in the right direction, but they are still manifestly short in the face of the economic paralysis we are facing”, defends António Saraiva. “Portuguese companies are being adversely affected by their European competitors, which are receiving public support from their countries more substantially and faster. This difference will have immediate consequences: more unemployment and a slower recovery in Portugal ”, he says.

For the bosses’ representative, “it is essential to approve a robust and immediate plan. The government must act now. It cannot be by episodes. Portuguese companies cannot be alone ”, underlines the president of CIP.

António Saraiva also recalls that “it is very important that part of the support is lost”, as CIP has been proposing. “Companies urgently need treasury and not more and more debt. Only in this way can we avoid a potential business and social calamity in Portugal. ”
