The German carrier prohibits passengers from using AirTag trackers

During air travel, passenger luggage is often lost, so more and more people are using Apple AirTag trackers to track their location. However, the German flag carrier Lufthansa has banned passengers from using the tracking tags. The company says devices such as the AirTag are classified as portable electronic devices and are therefore subject to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) dangerous goods regulations.

Recall that Apple AirTag tracking tags are made in the form of a compact keychain, which is protected from water, has a built-in speaker and works via Bluetooth LE wireless technology. The tracker will allow you to find anything by displaying its location on the map. The device works in tandem with the Locator app for iOS. Apple smartphones with the U1 chip (which first appeared on the iPhone 11) allow you to search for things with the AirTag tracker with pinpoint accuracy.

First, the ban concerns the signal transmission function by trackers. It must be turned off during the flight, similar to how the rules govern the transport of smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices. Passengers can still carry the AirTag in their luggage, but the tracker must be turned off, making it useless. No other airline has yet come up with a similar ban.
