Buses and trams get ‘cough screens’

All city and regional buses and trams in the Netherlands will have so-called ‘cough screens’ for drivers. This means that travelers can board the front again, De Telegraaf writes. The transparent screens will be installed in the coming weeks.

The umbrella organization OVNL tells the newspaper that fare dodgers will soon have a harder time. “Since the corona crisis, there has been an average of about twenty percent fare dodgers, because the front door remains closed to protect the driver,” says chairman Pedro Peters. “Normally that is one to two percent. By getting in behind the percentage shoots up.”

One way street

In addition to the cough screens, drivers will ventilate their vehicle at every stop by opening all doors. One-way traffic is also introduced, front in and back out. “The chance of exposure to the virus is thus even smaller, in addition to the already mandatory face masks”, says the OVNL chairman.

The first buses and trams with screens will hit the road at the beginning of September. The job should be completed in October.
